WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. – Hotel operator Northland Properties Corporation was fined $624,051.48 by WorkSafeBC in May in relation to several asbestos and lead violations.
According to a penalty notice, the firm was renovating one its locations in Williams Lake, B.C.
When WorkSafeBC inspected the site and observed debris from drywall, an identified asbestos-containing material (ACM) as well as mould on a wall and debris from paint identified as containing lead was discovered.
The workers doing renovation activities had not been trained or certified in asbestos abatement, the organization notes, and most workers were not using any respiratory protection.
No negative pressure containment or decontamination was in place, and the firm did not have risk assessments and exposure controls plans for tasks associated with asbestos and lead.
As a result, the firm failed to ensure that before renovation work began, hazardous materials were safely contained or removed, which is considered a high-risk violation.
The firm also failed to ensure WorkSafeBC received a notice of project at least 48 hours before certain work activities involving ACMs began, a repeated violation.
Lastly, it failed to ensure the health and safety of all its workers and any other workers present at the workplace, a repeated and high-risk violation.Ìý
