SHERWOOD, SASK. — Bird Construction has been chosen to lead construction of a multi-year build for Bell AI Fabric’s 300 MW data centre in the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, Sask.
Costing approximately $1.7 billion, with about $1.3 billion expected to be incurred in 2026, Bell expects.
Alton Tangedal Architect Ltd. (ATAL), based in Regina, has been appointed Architect of Record, while George Gordon Developments Ltd. (GGDL) will carry out site services.
Previously, several Saskatchewan-based contractors were announced for the early phases of construction, including Regina-based Hipperson Construction.
As part of the project, two data halls will enter service in the first half of 2027 and two additional data halls in the latter half of 2027.
The project will be the largest purpose-built data centre in Canada and is expected to generate up to $12 billion in economic value for the province as well as 800 temporary construction jobs.
“In other words, construction will be happening between now and the end of 2027, and equipment will be moved in as the halls come online,” said Bell’s senior media manager David Marcille in a previous interview with the Journal of Commerce.
The constructor announcement also comes with news that Bell has formalized a long-term partnership with Bird for the AI data centre buildout.
Under the agreement, Bird will serve as Bell’s preferred construction partner, and the two have established a basis from which to collaborate on potential future AI data centre projects supporting Bell AI Fabric’s nationwide buildout, the release adds.
