WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government is moving forward on various stages and aspects of construction for several projects across the province that amount to more than $90 million in spending.

The government recently announced it is advancing design work for an $88 million construction project on two segments of Provincial Road (PR) 283 between The Pas and the Saskatchewan border to ensure more reliable travel in northern Manitoba.

The two segments, totalling nearly 40 kilometres between the Saskatchewan border and Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 10, are currently in the design stage. The segments include approximately 22 kilometres from the border to PR 282 and 18 kilometres from PR 282 to PTH 10, explains a release.

Planned work includes bituminous reconstruction, embankment and safety improvements as well as culvert replacements and access management. Construction on the first segment from PR 282 to PTH 10 is anticipated to begin in 2027.

The Manitoba government has prioritized advancing the segment of PR 283 from the Saskatchewan border to PR 282, while options continue to be evaluated near the Knapp Dam.

Further updates will be provided as design work progresses, the government added.

In addition, the province is spending nearly $4.8 million toward several projects in The Pas and surrounding areas. Construction will include safety improvements to PTH 6 as well as repairs to PTH 60 near the intersection of PTH 10.

Lastly, improvements are also slated to be carried out for PTH 2, with the project currently in the design phase and an invitation to tender anticipated this fall.

Construction on this approximately 22 kilometre section of PTH 2, from the west junction of PTH 21 to two kilometres west of Provincial Road 250 (Souris), is expected to begin in 2027, the release notes.

A nearby shoulder restoration project is planned for approximately 20 kilometres along PTH 2 from its intersection with PTH 83. The project has an estimated cost of $350,000 and will improve roadway conditions.
